Over my past few visits to Napa and Sonoma, I’ve found some nice little independent producers that are worth checking out. Much of the Scribe production sells out, so joining the SVS is a smart move even if you don’t end up dining at the farm. If you belong to the Scribe Viticultural Society (their wine club) you can dine with the Scribe folks when you pick-up your wine. I can assure you that it is one of the better places you will ever discover. ![]() Take your better half and visit for the weekend. If you are interested in wine and good food, do yourself a favor and visit Scribe at some point. I can say with certainty, that after extensive testing of the various Scribe wines throughout the property, it is indeed an outstanding experience. It was a tough assignment, but I’m very committed to the truth so I made the trip. To find out if my theory proved true I challenged myself to make the trip up to the two hundred acre farm to eat and drink with founder Andrew Mariani and the rest of the Scribe camp. The wine was aged on its fine lees, without stirring, imparting gentletexture. A long, cool fermentation took place withselected yeasts. Thevines are hand-harvested in the cool of the night.WinemakingThe bunches were whole cluster pressed, and following cold settling for a period of 24hours, the juice was racked off its gross lees. Generally, leaf coverage isleft on the fruiting zone of the vine to minimise any potential sun burn and keep the fruitfresh and with balanced acidity resulting in vibrant wines full of natural freshness. The vines are VSP trained on abilateral spur pruned cordon and are sustainably farmed. The vines are planted inthe deep, fertile Huichica loam soils of the estate. The estate vines are RobertYoung clones which have been grafted onto rootstock 101-14. The climate is influenced by its sheltered positionbetween the hills, which results in a dry, warm and sunny mesoclimate, gentlymoderated by its proximity to San Pablo Bay to the south. Sonoma Valley lies between the Mayacamas Mountains to the eastand Sonoma Mountains to the west. Once under full canopy later in theseason, the fruit developed evenly with concentrated flavours, colour and texture.Harvest began on August 13th with favourable, temperate weather throughout thepicking season.VineyardThe Chardonnay grapes come from the Sonoma Valley AVA, a subregion with theSonoma County. The spring months stayed dry and cool, slowing shoot growthand contributing to low yields and small berries. The Marianis believe that the best wines are the result of ahealthy relationship between man and nature, and that a vineyard managed inharmony with the greater ecosystem results in more site specific, terroir driven grapes.When vinified with non-interventionist natural methods, the result is a distinct wine thatspeaks vividly of its provenance.VintageA dry winter with below-average rainfall and a cool start to spring kept the vinesdormant late into March.
